About Merci au Savoir

Growing beyond together for the next generation of doctors and patients

CHU Sainte-Justine is the largest university hospital centre specializing in maternal and child health in Canada. In fact, 80% of Quebec pediatricians complete their training at Sainte-Justine. In 1998, a group of dedicated physicians committed to supporting the hospital’s teaching mission through personal donations: this is how the very first Academic Fund was created.

Since then, their generous contributions have been joined by those from philanthropic partners and community members, notably via the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s matching-fund scholarship program. Inspired by their shared values, these donors support advanced training for care and research teams, as well as subspecialty training for local and international physicians. The knowledge sharing and breakthroughs they make possible lay the groundwork for transformative innovations.

This alliance between doctors and donors who share a common desire to invest in future generations is as unique as it is promising.

Today, 29 departments and services at Sainte-Justine have established Academic Funds. Total contributions surpassed the $30 million mark, and over 500 fellowships have been awarded. Your contribution to these Funds enables Sainte-Justine’s best and brightest minds to complete their subspecialty training at prestigious institutions abroad. It also gives rising stars in maternal and child health care from around the world the opportunity to share their expertise with the teams here at home, as well as hone their skills at the bedside of patients in Quebec, which contributes to Sainte-Justine’s mission of excellence and enhances its international reputation.

Donations to Scientific Research Funds directly support the vital work of researchers shaping the future of pediatrics. These pioneering Funds foster innovation in their respective fields, transforming the lives of a growing number of children and families who, without the advances made possible by your support, would still be searching for solutions.

The future starts here, and the legacy you leave by donating to the Academic and Scientific Research Funds will last for generations to come. Thank you for contributing to these worthwhile programs and for joining forces with us to maximize Sainte-Justine’s impact on the health of young people, and on society as a whole. Together, let’s grow beyond for the advancement of knowledge!

How do donations to the Academic and Scientific Research Funds work?

The Academic and Scientific Research Funds are made up of donations collected from doctors at the university hospital centre, philanthropic partners, and members of the community. Each Fund is associated with a specific department or service.

You can also contribute to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s general matching-fund scholarship program, which allows us to supplement the disbursements certain fellows receive from Academic Funds for subspecialty training.

A portion, or even all, of certain Funds are capitalized, that is, invested in perpetuity. The invested donations generate an annual investment income, enabling us to make an ongoing contribution to the education and knowledge advancement missions of an ever-growing number of CHU Sainte-Justine departments and services.

What do the Academic and Scientific Research Funds enable?

The CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s Academic Funds and matching-fund scholarships enable Sainte-Justine’s best and brightest minds to complete their subspecialty training at prestigious institutions abroad. They also give rising stars in pediatrics from around the world the opportunity to share their expertise with the teams here at home, as well as hone their skills at the bedside of patients in Quebec, which contributes to Sainte-Justine’s mission of excellence and enhances its international reputation.

The Scientific Research Funds directly support research in the department or unit with which they are associated, thus fostering innovation in health care. They also have a significant leverage effect in obtaining additional public and private funding.
